Not sure how to care for your mouth after your extractions and immediate dentures placed? See below for instructions after your surgery.
Immediate Dentures Post Op Instructions
The first 24 hours your immediate denture is not to be removed from your mouth. If the denture is removed, swelling will occur and it will make it difficult if not impossible to replace it.
After 24 hours or at a predetermined appointment requested by the dentist, you will see your dentist and be given instructions on how to care for your denture.
After extractions, do not rinse, spit, smoke or suck on a straw. Do not rinse your mouth vigorously. Do not drink hot or carbonated beverages.
Your immediate denture not only replaced your missing teeth but acts as a protection to the surgical extraction sites, to control swelling and bleeding. The denture needs to be in place to be effective.
The fit of your immediate denture will change as your mouth heals from the extraction of your teeth. As healing occurs the ridges change shape and generally shrink in size. An immediate denture may have to be replaced or relined after your mouth is completely healed.
Patients willl experience discomfort and possibly difficulty eating and speaking. For some, discomfort will only last a few days while other may take longer to adjust to their dentures.
An immediate denture will need to be adjusted and /or relinedto compensate for the changes that willtake place in your mouth as you heal. You will be instructed to see your dentist for any adjustments that may be required as you are healing.
After the extraction site sockets have healed, which can take 2-6 weeks, you can use denture adhesive or poswder to stabalize your denture. The bone, however, may take up to 6 months to heal and fill in the jaw bone., at which time your dentist will speak to you about having a permanent reline done on your denture.
