Dentures Q & A
What types of dentures are available?
Dentures are removable prosthetic oral appliances that restore your ability to eat, talk, and smile without feeling self-conscious about missing teeth. Dentures also help improve lost facial volume. Today’s dentures are more natural-looking and easier to get than in the past, as dental technologies and procedures have come a long way in recent years.
At Walker Family Dentistry, the dentists offer the highest quality complete, partial, and implanted dentures. They can help decide which type is best for your dental needs and your lifestyle, including:
- Fixed dentures, such as bridges and implants
- Complete, removable dentures that replace all upper and lower teeth
- Partial dentures that attach to your natural teeth
- Implant-supported dentures
Your dentist custom-fits your new dentures to ensure the best possible functionality and comfort for your new teeth. In some cases, you can even get “immediate” dentures so you don’t have to be without teeth.
What’s the difference between conventional and immediate dentures?
With conventional dentures, you have to wait until your mouth fully heals from any necessary dental work. Before you can get your new teeth, your dentist may need to remove decayed teeth or prepare your mouth for your new set of complete upper and lower dentures. It may take several months for your gum tissue to heal, so you’ll be without teeth during this time.
Immediate dentures are removable, like conventional dentures, but your dentist inserts them the same day they finish preparing your mouth for the new teeth. The advantage of immediate dentures is that you won’t be without teeth as your gums heal from dental work. However, you will most likely need to have your dentures realigned a few times as your jaw heals to ensure the best fit.
What are implant-supported dentures?
Implant-supported dentures are dentures that are anchored by dental implants. You may be a good candidate for implanted dentures if you are missing teeth, but still have adequate bone in your jaw to support the implants. Implanted dentures have special attachments that snap into place to permanently implanted supports in your jawbone.
The Walker Family Dentistry team helps you decide which type of dentures will give you the best function, comfort, and aesthetics for your overall oral health and wellness. While it may take a while to get used to your new, custom dentures, it’s worth it, in the long run, to be able to chew and talk more easily, and have a smile you can feel good about.
